El Pacto Chileno de los Plásticos ha encontrado aliados invaluables en WRAP y en UKRI, organizaciones sin fines de lucro en el Reino Unido, dedicadas a impulsar soluciones sostenibles para la gestión de residuos y la economía circular, y a la investigación e innovación, respectivamente.   

El trabajo del Pacto Chileno de los Plásticos, cuyo desafío se enfoca en avanzar hacia una economía circular de los plásticos desde donde se proponen nuevas formas de fabricación, uso, reutilización y reciclaje de los envases y embalajes plásticos, se sustenta en la colaboración con sus socios: incluyendo al sector público, privado y civil. En ese contexto, la asesoría experta, la entrega de recursos, y el apoyo constante proporcionado por WRAP y UKRI ha permitido que Chile cuente con herramientas valiosas para abordar la problemática de los plásticos de manera sostenible. 

Dentro del trabajo en conjunto con WRAP y UKRI, destacan especialmente dos proyectos realizados durante el año 2022. 

En noviembre, se llevó a cabo la primera Semana del Reciclaje de Chile, inspirada por el exitoso evento «Recycle Now» organizado por WRAP hace dos décadas en el Reino Unido. Esta iniciativa logró sensibilizar a la población chilena sobre la importancia de reciclar y fomentar el correcto manejo de los desechos plásticos. 

Fueron diez días de actividades de educación ambiental gratuita y ciudadana, limpiezas de cerros y riberas de ríos, obras de teatro, música, talleres sustentables y feria de emprendedores.  Además, se realizó un estudio que profundizó sobre los hábitos en torno al reciclaje, y un conversatorio sobre los desafíos que presenta la Ley de Responsabilidad Extendida del Productor -próxima a implementarse en el país – y donde participó Carolina Fernández, International Partnership Manager de WRAP, quien estuvo a cargo de acercar los retos y experiencias exitosas internacionales a la realidad local. 

Además, gracias al apoyo de WRAP y UKRI, se implementó un proyecto piloto enfocado en la recolección, clasificación y valorización de envases plásticos flexibles de uso domiciliario, que son una de las categorías de plástico de mayor crecimiento y de los más problemáticos en Chile y el mundo. El proyecto incluyó el diseño e implementación de una campaña comunicacional educativa, denominada “Duro con el Flexible”, la que estuvo enfocada en concientizar a la ciudadanía en torno a la problemática asociada a este tipo de envases plásticos y, sobre todo, estuvo centrada en impulsar que estos fueran reconocidos y adecuadamente dispuestos por las personas para su posterior valorización. 

“El apoyo técnico y financiero que nos ha entregado WRAP y UKRI ha sido fundamental para lograr implementar acciones desde el Pacto Chileno de los Plásticos vinculadas con grandes desafíos en torno a los plásticos, como lo son la gestión circular de los plásticos flexibles y la sensibilización y educación ambiental. Además, nos ha permitido incorporar la experiencia internacional en nuestro quehacer y fortalecer nuestras capacidades técnicas. La posibilidad de estar constantemente conectados con el equipo de WRAP y UKRI, y a través de ellos, con los demás Pactos a nivel mundial, ha sido tremendamente enriquecedor permitiéndonos intercambiar aprendizajes y experiencias, fomentando la colaboración y promoviendo la adopción de prácticas y estrategias sostenibles en la industria y la sociedad en general”, señaló Fernanda Valdivieso, directora del Pacto Chileno de los Plásticos. 

El modelo económico y social de producir – consumir – botar ha llegado a su límite. El mundo está sobregirado en uso de recursos naturales, y la contaminación por residuos plásticos está generando daños irreparables en el ecosistema. 

Desde el Pacto Chileno de los Plásticos entendemos que solo mediante la unión de esfuerzos y la asociatividad podremos enfrentar los retos ambientales, y en ese sentido, el apoyo de WRAP y UKRI es clave para efectivamente lograr avanzar hacia una economía circular del plástico, manteniendo su valor en el tiempo y alargando su vida útil.

The Constant and Invaluable Support of WRAP and UKRI to the Chilean Plastics Pact 

The Chilean Plastics Pact has found invaluable allies in WRAP and UKRI, non-profit organizations in the United Kingdom, dedicated to promoting sustainable solutions for waste management and the circular economy, and to research and innovation, respectively. 

The work of the Chilean Plastics Pact, which focuses on advancing towards a circular economy for plastics by proposing new ways of manufacturing, using, reusing, and recycling plastic packaging, relies on collaboration with its partners: including the public, private, and civil sectors. In this context, the expert advice, the provision of resources, and the constant support provided by WRAP and UKRI have enabled Chile to have valuable tools to address the issue of plastics sustainably. 

Within the joint work with WRAP and UKRI, two projects carried out during the year 2022 stand out. 

In November, the first Recycling Week in Chile was held, inspired by the successful event «Recycle Now» organized by WRAP for the last two decades in the United Kingdom. This initiative succeeded in raising awareness among the Chilean population about the importance of recycling and promoting the proper management of plastic waste. 

Ten days of free environmental and citizen education activities, hill and riverbank clean-ups, theater performances, music, sustainable workshops, and an entrepreneurs’ fair were held. Additionally, a study was conducted to delve into recycling habits, and a discussion was held on the challenges presented by the Extended Producer Responsibility Law, soon to be implemented in the country. Carolina Fernández, International Partnership Manager at WRAP, took part in the discussion, sharing international challenges and successful experiences with the local community. 

Furthermore, thanks to the support of WRAP and UKRI, a pilot project focusing on the collection, sorting, and valorization of household flexible plastic packaging was implemented. These types of plastics are one of the fastest growing and most problematic categories in Chile and the world. The project included the design and implementation of an educational communication campaign which aimed to raise awareness among citizens about the issues associated with this type of plastic packaging and, above all, focused on encouraging proper disposal for subsequent valorization. 

Fernanda Valdivieso, director of the Chilean Plastics Pact, stated, «The technical and financial support provided by WRAP and UKRI has been fundamental to implement actions from the Chilean Plastics Pact related to major challenges regarding plastics, such as the circular management of flexible plastics and environmental awareness and education. Additionally, it has allowed us to incorporate international expertise into our work and strengthen our technical capacities. The opportunity to be constantly connected with the WRAP and UKRI teams, and through them, with other Pacts worldwide, has been tremendously enriching, allowing us to exchange knowledge and experiences, fostering collaboration, and promoting the adoption of sustainable practices and strategies in the industry and society as a whole.» 

The economic and social model of producing-consuming-discarding has reached its limit. The world is overspending on natural resources, and plastic waste pollution is causing irreparable damage to the ecosystem. 

From the Chilean Plastics Pact’s perspective, we understand that only through joint efforts and collaboration can we address environmental challenges. In that sense, the support of WRAP and UKRI is key to effectively advance towards a circular economy for plastics, preserving their value over time and extending their useful life.
